SHaDOW MOUNTAIN
SIGNATURE HOLE 17
This par-5 hole has earned its nickname, “The Monster” for good reason. Accuracy is required right from the tee, with a downhill drive to the narrow fairway 100 feet below. Some careful shot-making will help to avoid the ponds and tall pines lining the course. Finish with a neat approach to the small green tucked into the forest.

Why is Shadow Mountain's signature hole called "The Monster"?
Hole 17 at Shadow Mountain has earned the nickname "The Monster" for good reason. It is a par 5 that begins with a tee shot from a ledge approximately 100 feet above the narrow fairway below. The dramatic drop, combined with ponds and towering pines guarding the approach, makes it one of the most visually intimidating and strategically challenging holes in all of Canadian golf. In fact, the four finishing holes at Shadow Mountain all feature cliff-edge tee shots, leaving golfers breathless with views stretching across Fisher Peak, the Steeples, and the Purcell mountain range.
When did Shadow Mountain Golf Course open and who designed it?
Shadow Mountain was designed by the acclaimed architecture duo Graham Cooke and Wayne Carleton of Cooke Carleton International Golf Course Architects and opened in 2009. Notably, each of the 18 holes has been given its own nickname — including "007," "Desert Dunes," and "Links" — reflecting the diverse terrain and personality the designers wove into the layout across the rolling forested sand dunes and mountainous terrain north of Cranbrook.
How difficult is Shadow Mountain and is it suitable for all skill levels?
Shadow Mountain is considered one of the most challenging courses in the Kootenay Rockies, with a course rating of 74.5 and a slope of 138 from the back tees, stretching to 7,405 yards — the longest course in the Golf Kimberley Cranbrook consortium. However, six tee box options make it playable for golfers of all skill levels, and the course rewards strategic, patient play at any distance.
